The “XXX one” Hub Mechanism (The gravity-zero freewheel hub system is covered by pending Australian and international patent applications.) but is dure to have ceramic bearings and a carbon hub.

The “X one” Series 5 Hub Mechanism

The “X one” Series 5 Hub Mechanism (The gravity-zero freewheel hub system is covered by pending Australian and international patent applications.) is fitted to all wheels sets from December 2007 onwards. The Series 5 with increased cam angles and spring tensions lock up is more instant. It eliminates any form of backlash/lag at the hub or pedal: This equals zero lag. In simple terms it is like riding a fixed wheel bike with gears. The “X one” creates a pedalling motion like no other freewheel hub, it propells the riders legs through the position of least mechanical advantage at the top and bottom of each pedal stroke. This moment is sometimes refered to as TDC and BDC, the Top Dead Centre and the Bottom Dead Centre.

All of our carbon wheels are built using structural carbon rims - this means that the carbon is ‘hard’ to touch and is a structural part of the wheel.

Carbon 50 wheels are available in either tubular or clincher version, Carbon 82 and 101’s are tubular only. We currently don’t sell the clinchers as rim only. Planet X offer a variety of rim drillings - 16h, 24h, and 32h.

Bamboo Road Bike from CalfeeDesign.com

In the mid-nineties, flooring manufacturers became the first modern companies to take advantage of bamboo, Asians have used it in construction for centuries, but manufacturers are also using it to make bikes.

  • This is not just a cool bike. It is appropriate for everyday use and for racing. The vibration damping is a performance advantage on longer rides. Each frame is built to order and every frame is a unique. Tubes are selected for the weight of the rider. The geometry of the frame can be any of our usual geometries: Pro, Tri or Cross. Custom frames can also be made. Mountain Bike frames are now available.
  • Details. The bike is made from Bamboo that has been smoked and heat treated to prevent splitting. Lugs are made of hemp fiber, for the all-natural look. The chainstays are available in carbon fiber for extra stiffness in the drivetrain.
  • Finish. We coat the bamboo with a satin polyurethane to seal it up.
  • Awards. Calfee Bamboo bikes have won awards for Best Road Bike, Best Off-Road Bike and Peoples’ Choice Award at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show.
  • A Calfee Bamboo bike won 1st place in the open class at the Great Western Bicycle Rally’s Concourse d’Elegance show.
  • If there were an award for “Bicycle with lowest carbon footprint” (least amount of carbon dioxide emissions in the production of the frame), this frame would win, hands down.
